Are you eating fresh vegetables?

Eating fruits and vegetables are very good for health, that’s known by all. Keeping fruits and vegetables in the diet helps to reduce diseases, and promotes weight loss because it has very less calorie content. Vegetables makes us stronger and helps fighting diseases like heart disease, high blood pressure, some cancers, etc. Without veggies chances of digestive disfunction like constipation, hemorrhoids, etc. can occur.

Now as we know the benifits of having veggies on our diet, the question which very commonly arises in our minds these days ; are we eating fresh vegetables?

India being one of the largest producer of vegetables also lacks in providing fresh vegetables to its citizens. Let us know how, the vegetables and fruits starts to deteriorate from the time it’s being harvested. After harvest, its takes some time to reach to the market for sale. To avoid further damage to the vegetables they are kept in the cold storage where the temperature is maintained to keep them in good condition.

Although many fruits and vegetables keep their antioxidants longer than their looks, but that doesn’t means that you should eat spoiled vegetables. From the cold storage these are transported to the markets. Some of the vegetables are rotten by then already.

However local vegetables whose transportation takes less time tends to be more fresh. Nowadays, everyone wants to have a healthy balanced diet and so the demand for fruits and vegetables have been increased. To meet such demands malpractice is done sometimes when the demand tends to be very high.

Sometimes it’s seen that unriped fruits and tender vegetables are treated with chemicals to meet the demands. The supply chain is very much manipulated to make profits and compete with other suppliers. Toxic chemicals are also used to make the vegetables appealing to the eye. You may buy a vegetable thinking that it’s fresh by seeing the colour but when you reach home by then it may rot away.

Malpracticers generally use cooper sulphate, carbide, malachite green (used for coloration of vegetables), wax, petroleum etc. To provide appealing looks of vegetables. Carefully choose the vendor from where you’re buying your stuff to avoid such scams.

With each day passing by, the malpracticers bring new ways of cheating on the customer and make profits. And given the times now, not only to remove these unwanted chemicals but also to maintain hygiene, only by washing the vegetables on running water is not enough neither applying soap and detergent on them is suitable.

Do not think of spraying alcohol sanitizers either. Applying more chemicals to wash vegetables and fruits may inject chemicals deeper making them dangerous to consume. In this situation, you can use ayurvedic vegetable cleaners to prevent contamination of vegetables without changing their nutritional values. They are also able to washout pesticides along with the waxes.

In these testing times we should take as much as precautions as we can to stay healthy. And that starts with maintaining a healthy balanced diet full of fresh and clean Vegetables and fruits. Only a healthy body with strong immunity is our defense line in this pandemic. So be aware and assure about the vendor and the stuff you buy from them.

Pathogens trapped in food can be killed by using heat, radiation and chemicals. In food industry, the most common way to sanitize food products is by using chemicals. Nowadays each and every single person must sanitize everything before using, just like that food products like fruits, vegetables, resins, nuts, grains, everything must be sanitized before using.

The FDA Food Code identifies a few sanitizers which can be used for Sanitising the food products. Food gets contaminate by four methods they are : Chemical, Microbial, Physical and Allergic. All good are at risk of getting contaminated by these four ways. This is why food handlers have a legal responsibility if handling the food with up most care and they must ensure that the food preparation is free from contamination and safe for the consumer.

The main responsibility lies with the food handlers who delivers cooked foods. They must ensure that the food products which are taken from market must be cleaned. They while processing the food they must ensure every cook is wearing hand gloves, caps and face shield. They must check every single person’s temperature and keep them sanitized.

Effective ways of cleaning food products :

  1. Preparation- remove loose dust particles which are seen by naked eyes.
  2. Cleaning- Wash with hot water.
  3. Sanitising- Treat with very hot and clean water for atleast 2 minutes.
  4. Air drying.

Though there are some sanitizers which included only soaking of food products in water for 5-10 minutes. Please remember we need to clean the dirt, do not spray detol and savlon sprays for Sanitising the food products.

BLEACHING is also NOT required for food Sanitising.

VINEGAR can be used for Sanitising by setting the time to 30 minutes. BUT IT IS NOT recommended for Sanitising Some specific food products it has acetic acid which destroys some surfaces, so vinegar is not recommended for use in aluminium, cast iron, waxed wood or natural stone.

Chlorine based cleaners, quaternary ammonium and iodine sanitizers are mostly used in the food industry. Using a food grade sanitizer is ideal for these days. There are multiple options available for buying sanitizers these days. But one must use branded or medicated sanitizers for safety.

Feeding habits

It is necessary to encourage healthy feeding habits right from the beginning to continue with healthy growth. Baby feeding habits are divided into three categories based on the types. Infant-led, Parent-led and Combination of both of the above.

In the infant-led schedule the feeding is done according to the infant which may lead to skipping of the number of feeds.

The Parent-led schedule is fixed by the parent according and it has specific time for everything . In the combination of both of these both the infant and the parents schedules are being considered to form a schedule which is according to both of them and is generally widely followed.

However the parents need to determine which of these works best for the baby and plan accordingly.

The choices of food that you have for a baby upto three months is very limited. It should be solely liquid, but if you think you want to go for something solid you should once consul with your doctor before giving that to the infant. Although infants have little tummies, thus they need to be fed frequently so that they could meet their growth and developmental process easily. Since infants survive solely on milk, either breast milk or formula the new mother should also consume a healthy diet full with nutrients as this will directly affect the baby.

Important things to remember

1. Infants do tend to have growth spurts and this could start from two weeks onwards.

2. The most common thing in infants is spit up because the muscular valve connecting the oesophagus and the stomach is immature. This follows the stomach back up.

3. Bowel movements are regular in infants.Expect at least three bowel movements per day, in some babies may be up to four to twelve.

As we all know that kids need an environment to concentrate on their studies. Here I would
suggest you to have a study table and chair on the room where the light reaches naturally
through a door or window and he likes to spend time and that is free from outside invasion.
Sometimes it could be your garden, roof, or other places where your child could enjoy his
studies. Choose the place a according to your child’s preferences.

● Build routines and schedules

Prepare tasks list, study times, play times according to their activity to foster their
independence. Choose the timings carefully so they do not get bored or too tired of studying.
Scheduling should include their play times and everything thing they do so that it can visualise
their daily activities.

● Encourage to engage in work or play

To encourage them in their studies you should keep some small prizes and display their work so to keep up the good work and would also encourage them to work hard and polish their skills. You can also make them talk to their friends and loved ones after completion of their tasks. You could also sometimes teach your child through some games so that he enjoys learning this will help them to continue with their study often.

● Eliminate distractions

The most important attribute of home learning is to eliminate the distractions. This could be the presence of too many people around or some noise or other things. You should always keep the place of study clean and an isolated place to eliminate distractions.

Leave time for breaks

Sometimes it’s okay to put a day or two off from leaning. You could take your child for a
day out to the zoo or some other places where he’ll get to know about things and how they actually are ! This will help them to have a better understanding of what they are learning about in their books. Or just simply take them out for a day where they could
play with other children and socialize. Sometimes these are all the things your child needs.

Remember your child’s learning space should be comfortable. To enhance this process, join their learning or tasks, you can also employ their siblings to do the same. You can keep some pillows or bean bags to sit there and read our books also. But this should not be too comfortable also as this will not help in learning too. Keep it just right and see the
magic.
