GoHighLevel Sub-Account vs Your Own Agency Account: Which Should You Buy?

GoHighLevel's cheapest plan is $97 a month. A sub-account from an agency is $29. This page explains exactly what you give up at each price, what a year actually costs, and how to decide in five questions — including when you should not buy the cheap option from us.

The short answer

If you run one business and will never resell GoHighLevel, a $29/month sub-account gives you the entire platform at 30% of the price. Same CRM, same automations, same AI. You give up the ability to create other sub-accounts, resell the software, or hold your own billing — none of which a single business needs.

If you plan to resell GoHighLevel to clients, need more than one workspace, or want to be the top-level owner, buy your own agency account. Starter at $97 covers up to three client sub-accounts; Unlimited at $297 removes the cap. A sub-account would be the wrong purchase for you, and we would rather say so than sell it.

Five Questions That Settle It

Answer honestly. One “yes” on questions 1–4 means you need your own account.

1

Will you sell GoHighLevel to other businesses?

If you are an agency, consultant or freelancer who wants clients on the platform under your brand: own account. Sub-accounts cannot resell. If you just want a CRM for yourself: sub-account is fine.

2

Do you need more than one workspace?

Two brands, two locations that must stay separate, or a client project alongside your own business: own account (Starter gives you three). One business, one workspace: sub-account.

3

Do you need API access or a white-labelled app?

Custom integrations, your own mobile app, developer work: Unlimited or above. Standard integrations through Zapier, Make and native connectors work fine on a sub-account: sub-account.

4

Does owning the top-level account matter to you?

Some people are simply not comfortable with their CRM living under someone else's agency, and that is a legitimate reason: own account. If you are comfortable with a provider who lets you export everything and leave any time: sub-account.

5

Is $97 a month a meaningful expense right now?

If you are starting out, testing whether a CRM will actually change your business, or watching costs: start on a sub-account, learn the platform, and upgrade with a snapshot of your build once it is earning. If $97 is a rounding error: buy Starter and skip the middle step.

What You Give Up Either Way

With a sub-account, you give up…

  • Ownership. The account exists under an agency. You control the inside, not the outside.
  • Reselling. No SaaS Mode, no client sub-accounts, no rebilling.
  • Your own payment method. Usage is billed through the agency. Ask how they handle it before you buy.
  • API access and the white-labelled desktop app.
  • Independence from the provider. If the agency disappears, you need to migrate. Choose one that lets you export everything — and check that they are a registered company you can find.

With your own account, you give up…

  • $816 a year minimum — the gap between $348 and $1,164 before usage.
  • Someone to call. GoHighLevel support is ticket-based. On a sub-account you have a human who already knows your setup.
  • Time. Agency-level settings, Twilio, A2P registration, snapshots and billing are all yours to configure. Most single-business owners never touch 80% of it.
  • A low-risk way to learn. Committing $97/month before you know whether you will use the platform is how accounts end up half-built and abandoned.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a GoHighLevel sub-account the same as the real thing?

Functionally, yes. A sub-account is a full GoHighLevel workspace with the same CRM, pipelines, calendars, funnels, workflows, email, SMS and AI features as any other account. The difference is ownership, not features: the sub-account sits underneath an agency account that someone else owns. You control everything inside it; you do not control the agency layer above it.

What can I not do with a sub-account?

Four things. You cannot create additional sub-accounts. You cannot resell GoHighLevel to your own clients or use SaaS Mode. You cannot use white-label rebilling or the agency dashboard. And you cannot hold your own payment method for usage - the agency pays GoHighLevel and passes usage on to you. If none of those four matter to your business, the limits will never affect you.

How much does GoHighLevel actually cost per year on each plan?

As of 2026, before usage: a $29/mo sub-account is $348 a year. The $97 Starter plan is $1,164 a year, or roughly $970 if you prepay annually. Unlimited at $297 is $3,564, and SaaS Pro at $497 is $5,964. On top of every option, expect $20 to $150 a month in metered usage for SMS, calls, email and AI, depending on volume. Check gohighlevel.com/pricing for the current figures, as plans change.

Can I start on a sub-account and move to my own account later?

Yes, and many people do exactly that. Your contacts, opportunities and conversations export at any time, and a snapshot of your funnels, workflows and calendars can be loaded into your own agency account. It is a migration rather than a one-click switch, but nothing is locked in and there is no exit fee. Starting small and upgrading once you are reselling is the lowest-risk path.

Which plan do I need to resell GoHighLevel to clients?

You need your own agency account, not a sub-account. The Starter plan at $97 lets you create up to three sub-accounts for clients. Unlimited at $297 removes the cap and adds API access. SaaS Pro at $497 adds SaaS Mode, which lets you rebill clients automatically under your own brand. If reselling is the plan, Unlimited is usually the right starting point.

Is there an even cheaper way to get GoHighLevel?

Not a legitimate one. GoHighLevel does not sell individual accounts below $97, and any provider offering the full platform for less than a sub-account price is almost certainly sharing one login across many businesses, which breaks GoHighLevel's terms and puts your data next to strangers. A properly provisioned sub-account at $29 is the floor.

Who pays for usage on a sub-account?

The agency account is the only one that can hold a payment method, so usage is charged to the agency first and passed on. With us, usage under $5 a month is absorbed and you are sent nothing; above $5 you get an itemised invoice at cost with no markup. Ask any sub-account provider how they handle this before you buy - it is the question most people forget.
